Understanding Blood Sugar — What HbA1c Really Means

HbA1c is the most important number for diabetics. Here is what it means, target ranges, and how to improve it.

What Is HbA1c?

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) measures your average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months. Unlike a fasting glucose test (a single snapshot), HbA1c shows the full picture.

HbA1c Ranges

  • Below 5.7% — Normal
  • 5.7% to 6.4% — Prediabetes
  • 6.5% and above — Diabetes
  • Target for diabetics: Below 7.0%

Why It Matters More Than Fasting Sugar

Many people have normal fasting sugar but elevated HbA1c due to post-meal spikes. HbA1c catches this pattern that a single glucose test misses.

How to Lower Your HbA1c

  • Reduce refined carbohydrates and sugar
  • Exercise for 30 minutes daily
  • Take medicines as prescribed — never skip
  • Monitor blood sugar regularly at home
  • Get HbA1c tested every 3 months
