What Is HbA1c?
HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) measures your average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months. Unlike a fasting glucose test (a single snapshot), HbA1c shows the full picture.
HbA1c Ranges
- Below 5.7% — Normal
- 5.7% to 6.4% — Prediabetes
- 6.5% and above — Diabetes
- Target for diabetics: Below 7.0%
Why It Matters More Than Fasting Sugar
Many people have normal fasting sugar but elevated HbA1c due to post-meal spikes. HbA1c catches this pattern that a single glucose test misses.
How to Lower Your HbA1c
- Reduce refined carbohydrates and sugar
- Exercise for 30 minutes daily
- Take medicines as prescribed — never skip
- Monitor blood sugar regularly at home
- Get HbA1c tested every 3 months
