What is Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate?
Budesonide is a corticosteroid drug which stops the release of inflammation-causing chemicals and substances in the body. Formoterol Fumarate on the other hand is a bronchodilator which functions by relaxing muscles in the air passages to enhance breathing.
Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate combination inhalation medicine is prescribed to prevent asthma attacks. It is also used to stop flare-ups or deteriorating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

What is Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate?
Budesonide is a corticosteroid drug which stops the release of inflammation-causing chemicals and substances in the body. Formoterol Fumarate on the other hand is a bronchodilator which functions by relaxing muscles in the air passages to enhance breathing.
Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate combination inhalation medicine is prescribed to prevent asthma attacks. It is also used to stop flare-ups or deteriorating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate may also be used for conditions not listed above. This medication is sold under various trade names, some of which are Symbicort, Pulmicort, Foracort (made by Cipla), and Fomtide (made by Sun Pharma).
Important Information about Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate
Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate (Symbicort, Pulmicort, Foracort, and Fomtide) will not prevent an asthma attack that has already started. Don?t take this medication in such an incident.
Formoterol Fumarate may raise the risk of asthma-related death. Remember to use only the prescribed dose of this medication. Consult your doctor about individual risks and benefits of this medication.
Do not use Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate medication without your doctor?s advice if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast feeding. Don?t give this medication to children below 4 years of age. This medication may affect growth in children as it contains a steroid. Tell your doctor if you think that your child?s growth pattern is not proper while using this medication.?
Use of medications containing steroids can be damaging to bone health and cause osteoporosis (porous bones). The risks increase largely if you smoke, don?t exercise, have vitamin D or calcium deficiency, or if you have a history of osteoporosis in your family lineage.
Before taking Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate
Don?t use Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate if you are allergic to fluticasone or Formoterol Fumarate, or milk proteins. Also avoid this medication if you are already having an asthma attack or severe COPD conditions.?
To ensure that this medication is safe for you, let your doctor know if you have any of these conditions: food or drug allergy; heart disease or high blood pressure; seizure or epilepsy disorder; diabetes; eye disorder like glaucoma; tuberculosis; an infection; liver disease; thyroid problem; osteoporosis; or compromised immunity.
How should I take Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate?
You must use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. You may also refer the instructions printed on the medication label for complete details.
To prevent yeast infection in your mouth, rinse your mouth with water after using the spray. Keep a stock of the number of sprays used and discard the canister after about 120 sprays even if you feel that there is some amount of medication left in it.
Do not stop using a steroidal medication suddenly or you may get undesirable and nasty withdrawal effects. Stop the medication use gradually. Keep an identification card with you always which says that you need an oral steroid in an emergency.
Use all your medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Let your doctor know if the medicine is not having any effect on you. An increased need of medicine may imply an impending asthma attack. Store Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate medication and inhalers in a cool and dry place. Don?t expose the canisters to high temperatures or they may explode.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. However don?t take the missed dose if the time to take the next dose is near. Don?t take extra medications to make up for the missed dose.
What if I overdose?
Get emergency medical help or contact the?Doctor immediately?in case of an overdose. Some symptoms of overdose of Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate are fast or irregular heartbeats; angina or chest pain; tremors; seizures; weakness; nausea; headache; or vomiting.
What should I avoid while taking Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate?
Remember not to use another form of Formoterol Fumarate (Severent) medicine or a similar inhaled bronchodilator (Foradil) like formoterol unless or otherwise directed by your doctor. This medication may reduce the count of white blood cells in your body which are crucial to your body?s defense system against foreign bodies and infections. Hence stay away from sick people and avoid places where chances of infections are high like hospitals. Seek medical help if you are exposed to chicken pox or measles as it can be fatal in people who are taking steroidal medications.
Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate Side Effects
Some common side effects of Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate (Symbicort, Pulmicort, Foracort, and Fomtide) are dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, runny nose, sinus pain, cough, or hoarse or deepened voice. Contact your doctor if these conditions persist or deteriorate.
There may be some allergic reactions to Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate Side like hives, breathing difficulty, swelling in face, lips, or throat. Contact your doctor immediately in such cases. Other serious side effects are tremor, restless feeling, fever, stabbing chest pain in chest, yellow or green mucus in cough, blurriness, mouth or lip sores, deteriorating asthma, irregular hear bets, bronchospasm. Get immediate medical help in such cases.

Drug Interactions with Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate
Let your doctor know about any present medication you may be using, especially amiodarone(Cordarone); anti retrovirals like atazanvir, ritonavir, indinavir, or others; a diuretic or water pill; MAO supprsors like isocarboxazid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, or others; antidepressants like imipramine, fluoxetine, desipramine, or others; antifungals like ketoconazole or itraconazole; or beta blockers like atenolol, metoprolol, carvedilol, or others. These medications may interact with Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate.
