What is Azelaic Acid?
Azelaic acid is the active ingredient of Finacea, Aziderm cream or gel among several other brands. It is an organic compound which is found naturally in wheat, rye and barley. It aids in quick renewal of the skin thereby reducing pimple and blackheads. It also kills acne and rosacea causing bacteria and hence it is used to treat acne and rosacea.
Azelaic acid may also be used to treat conditions not mentioned above.

Important Information about Azelaic Acid
You should not use Azelaic acid medication if you are allergic to azelaic acid or propylene glycol. Don’t apply azelaic acid medication on sensitive areas like eyes, nose, mouth, rectum, or vagina. Also don’t apply this medication on sun burned, wind burned, dry, irritated, chapped, or bruised skin. You may apply after these conditions have subsided.
Leave the surface exposed where you apply azelaic acid and don’t cover it as it may lead to more azelaic acid absorption into your skin and causing unwanted reactions. The results of using azelaic acid medication may not be seen for up to 4 weeks. Continue using the medication regularly as prescribed by your doctor. If your symptoms don’t improve even after 12 weeks, tell your doctor right away.?
Before using Azelaic Acid
Don’t use azelaic acid cream or gel if you are allergic to azelaic acid or propylene glycol. For safe use of this medication during pregnancy or breast feeding, consult your doctor.
How should I use Azelaic Acid?
Use azelaic acid cream or gel exactly as directed by your doctor. Don’t alter the course of the medication from the prescribed course in any way. Also don’t exceed the period of use for which it was prescribed.?
Before applying the cream or the gel, wash your hand thoroughly and dry it. Clean the area of application with a gentle soap or soap less cleansing solution and dry the area with a soft towel. Remember not to rub it aggressively or it can deteriorate the condition further. Then apply the proper amount of medication to the affected area. Remember to leave the affected area exposed.
Azelaic acid medication is applied twice per day normally – once in morning and before bedtime. Again, your doctor’s advice stands tall. If you have too much burning, dryness, or irritation, you may be advised to use the medication just once per day.
What if I miss a dose of Azelaic Acid?
If you forget to apply azelaic acid medication, use it as soon as your remember. Skip the missed dose if the time to apply next dose is near.
What if I overdose?
Overdosing on azelaic acid medication may lead to some serious conditions like severe burning, stinging, itching, warmth, dryness, hives, or changes in skin color. This is not a full list and there may be other reactions. Get urgent medical attention in case of these overdose reactions.
What should I avoid while taking Azelaic Acid?
Don’t apply other medications on the affected areas where you have applied azelaic acid cream or gel. Apply only if your doctor tells you to do so. Also avoid using skin products which may be harsh on your skin and cause irritation like harsh soaps or cleanser, or skin products containing alcohol, lime, spices, or astringents.
There may also be some diet restrictions imposed on you by your doctor like avoiding spicy foods alcoholic drinks and other such food items which may cause flushing or skin rashes while using azelaic acid.
Remember not to cover the area of application of azelaic acid medication.
Azelaic Acid Side Effects
Some people may not experience any side effects of azelaic acid medication but your case may be different. Get emergency medical attention if you experience any of these serious but rare conditions: breathing difficulty, skin hives, swelling on lips, mouth, or face.
Also immediately stop using the azelaic acid cream or gel if you get extreme burning, warmth, itching, irritation, tingling, redness, dryness, peeling, chapping, or changes in skin color.?
The above reactions are not a complete set of side effects of azelaic acid medication. There may be other side effects as well. Call your doctor right away if you feel your condition is serious.
Azelaic Acid Dosing Information
Apply the proper amount of cream, no greater or less than the prescribed limit. Usual dosage is twice daily for acne.
Interaction with other drugs
Azelaic acid medication which is applied topically is highly unlikely to interact with other drugs taken orally or injected. However it is always better and safe to share your entire medical history and any present medication and other related products’ details with your doctor as there may be some interaction possible. Don’t start a new medicine on your own or stop or alter the course of other medications.
