About This Product

Apixazen 2.5mg (Apixaban), containing Apixaban 2.5 mg, is an oral anticoagulant manufactured by various companies, including Steris Pharma in India, and marketed under brand names like Eliquis. Available as yellow, film-coated tablets, it is a prescription-only medication used to prevent and treat blood clots in conditions such as atrial fibrillation and post-surgical recovery. It belongs to the class of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), offering a convenient alternative to traditional blood thinners like warfarin.

Uses

  • Prevents stroke and blood clots in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)
  • Prevents deep vein thrombosis (DVT, leg vein clots) and pulmonary embolism (PE, lung clots) after hip or knee replacement surgery
  • Treats existing DVT or PE and reduces the risk of recurrence
  • Reduces the risk of recurrent DVT and PE after initial treatment

Side Effects

  • Common: Bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, bruising), nausea, anemia
  • Rare: Serious bleeding (e.g., stomach, eyes, brain), allergic reactions (hives, swelling), spinal blood clots (causing numbness or paralysis), liver issues Seek medical help for severe bleeding or symptoms like weakness, confusion, or breathing difficulty.

How to Use

  • Dosage:
    • Atrial fibrillation: 2.5 mg twice daily if over 80, under 60 kg, or with kidney issues (serum creatinine ≥1.5 mg/dL); otherwise, 5 mg twice daily
    • Post-surgery DVT/PE prevention: 2.5 mg twice daily, starting 12–24 hours after surgery (32–38 days for hip, 10–14 days for knee)
    • DVT/PE treatment: 10 mg twice daily for 7 days, then 5 mg twice daily; for prevention of recurrence, 2.5 mg twice daily
  • Swallow with water, with or without food, at the same times daily (e.g., morning and evening). Crush and mix with water, apple juice, or applesauce if unable to swallow whole; use within 4 hours. Can be given via nasogastric tube. Do not stop without doctor’s advice.
  • Overdose: Seek emergency help for unusual bleeding or bruising.

How Tablet Works

Apixazen 2.5mg (Apixaban) is a factor Xa inhibitor that blocks factor Xa, a key enzyme in blood clotting. This reduces thrombin production, preventing blood clot formation and growth. It helps maintain blood flow in conditions like atrial fibrillation or post-surgery, with effects starting within 3–4 hours of dosing.

Safety Advice

  • Allergies: Avoid if allergic to Apixaban or tablet ingredients (e.g., lactose, tartrazine).
  • Health Conditions: Use cautiously with kidney, liver, or bleeding disorders. Not recommended for severe liver disease or dialysis patients.
  • Drug Interactions: Avoid with NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen), other blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, heparin), or St. John’s wort. Inform your doctor of all medications.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Not recommended; may harm fetus or pass into breast milk, risking infant harm.
  • Driving: Safe, as it does not affect driving ability.
  • Alcohol: Limit alcohol to reduce stomach bleeding risk.
  • Surgery: Stop 24–48 hours before procedures, as advised by your doctor. Carry an anticoagulant alert card for emergencies.

What If You Forget to Take Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as remembered on the same day, then continue twice-daily dosing. Skip it if close to the next dose; do not double up. Missing doses increases clot risk. Set a reminder or ask your pharmacist for tips to stay on schedule.
