What is Oxcarbazepine?
Oxcarbazepine is an anti convulsant or anti epileptic drug. This medication reduces nerve impulses that induce seizures.Oxcarbazepine is prescribed primarily for the treatment of partial seizures in both adults and children who are at least 2 years and above.Oxcarbazepine is sold under various trade names, some of which are Trileptal and Oxcarb (made by Cipla). What is Oxcarbazepine?
Oxcarbazepine is an anti convulsant or anti epileptic drug. This medication reduces nerve impulses that induce seizures.Oxcarbazepine is prescribed primarily for the treatment of partial seizures in both adults and children who are at least 2 years and above.
Oxcarbazepine is sold under various trade names, some of which are Trileptal and Oxcarb (made by Cipla). This medication may also be given for conditions not mentioned in this guide.
Important Information about Oxcarbazepine
Do not take Oxcarbazepine anti convulsant medication (Trileptal, Oxcarb) if you are allergic to it. Before taking this medication, you must inform your doctor if you have a liver or kidney disease, or if you are allergic to another anti convulsant drug Oxcarbazepine.
Oxcarbazepine can dangerously lower sodium levels in the body resulting in life threatening electrolyte imbalance. Right away contact or see your doctor if you experience headache, thinking or memory problems, overall weakness, appetite loss, feeling unsteady, confusion, hallucinations, fainting, shortness of breath, or increased or more severe seizures.
Oxcarbazepine usage may lead to suicidal thoughts. This side effect may require you to undergo regular follow up checks by your doctor. You must notify your doctor about any new or deteriorating symptoms like mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, suicidal or self hurting thoughts, increased agitation, hostility, restlessness, hyperactivity (mental or physical).
Oxcarbazepine has the potential of reducing the effectiveness of birth control pills. Hence, while taking this medication, an alternative form of contraception is recommended like condoms or diaphragm with spermicide. Oxcarbazepine is a FDA pregnancy category C drug which means it is not known to harm an unborn baby when taken during pregnancy. This drug can pass into breast milk and can harm a nursing baby. You must consult your doctor about the safe use of Oxcarbazepine if you are pregnant, planning to become one, or if you are breast feeding.
Oxcarbazepine is not meant for children below 2 years of age and should not be given to them under any circumstances.

How should I take Oxcarbazepine?
Take Oxcarbazepine anti convulsant medication (Trileptal, Oxcarb) strictly according to your doctor’s direction or according to the instructions on the medication label. Do not alter the dosage unless your doctor advises you to do so. Your doctor may occasionally change the dosage over several weeks or months to ensure proper treatment. Follow your doctor’s directions properly
Oxcarbazepine should be taken twice daily or as directed by your doctor. Take this medication with a glass of water. Taking this medicine regularly as prescribed is the key to the maximum benefit due to it. Do not stop taking Oxcarbazepine suddenly even if you feel fine without telling your doctor. You must stop it gradually by taking less and less medication after consulting your doctor and if he or she advises.
A combination of several medications is prescribed for seizures. Use all the seizure medications as prescribed. Always store Oxcarbazepine in a cool and dry place, away from any heat and moisture. Ensure that children and pets don’t have access to any medications.
What happens is I miss a dose of Oxcarbazepine?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. However, you have to skip the missed dose if the time for the next dose is near. Taking two doses near to each can cause too much of the drug concentration in the body and can be dangerous.

In case of an overdose of Oxcarbazepine, get emergency medical attention or call the?Doctor Immediately.
Things and Activities to avoid while taking Oxcarbazepine
Do not get overheated or dehydrated during exercise or in hot weather while taking Oxcarbazepine. Remember to take sufficient fluids but not excessive. Alcohol consumption is not recommended with this medication.
Oxcarbazepine may impact your thinking capability and reflexes which can make activities like driving difficult and intimidating. Be extra careful while indulging in such activities or keep them to minimum and do it when absolutely necessary while taking this medication.
Side Effects due to Oxcarbazepine
Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal, Oxcarb) is known to cause these common side effects: headache, dizziness, sleepiness, nausea or upset stomach. It is very rare that this medication has caused a severe skin rash. If you do get a serious skin rash, contact your doctor right away.
Oxcarbazepine has the potential to lower blood sodium levels which can result in double vision, problems in speech, concentration, coordination, and walking.
Oxcarbazepine causes suicidal thoughts and therefore it is recommended that people who take this medication be monitored closely for signs of mood and behavior changes.
